*eclipse*

I have always been fascinated by the invisible forces that operate in nature, from motion in tiny particles to the movement of the planets. These forces can create beauty or be quite overwhelming, even dangerous. The solar eclipse seemed to me a particularly dramatic example of this simultaneously beautiful and threatening. It embodies the opposites of darkness and light, coldness and intense heat. *eclipse* uses transformations of a bell-like sound to explore these ideas at various levels of the musical structure.

*eclipse* (2000) for tape, was composed as part of my M.Phil. portfolio whilst I was studying at the University of Birmingham. It was included on the 2000 SPNM shortlist. The recording heard here is an extract from the piece.
