Undercurrent
Undercurrent (2007) for Bass Trombone and live electronics is part of a series of experimental works exploring the use of instrumental sound as a means of controlling live processing. In the opening and middle sections of the piece, the Trombone's amplitude, pitch, and duration are used to initiate musical texture and gesture. In the final section the amplitude and timbral contours of the Trombone have direct control over elements of the electronic processing.
The piece is inspired the dynamics of an undercurrent - a current that flows beneath the surface of a fluid.
The piece was performed by Simon Hall in the Recital Hall at Birmingham Conservatoire as part of a concert organised by Ensemble Interakt.
