Kanye West
I happened to watch the edited highlights of the 2008 Grammy awards on UK TV last night, and notice that as well as wearing some fantastic clothing, Kanye West seemed to have Daft Punk on stage with him for his performance of Stronger. Reports of this are all over the blogosphere at the moment, as a quick Google search with keywords 'kanye west daft punk' demonstrates. Reading through some of the blog entries, I was particularly interested to find this post, in which some of the comments discuss whether or not Daft Punk were miming, and indeed whether or not it was Daft Punk on stage at all.

Efterklang
Speaking of pieces with instruments and electronics going smoothly, I went to see Danish band Efterklang last night. I actually went on a whim, not really knowing who they were, but it turns out they are a sub-genre-inducing Folk/Electronica/Post-pop ensemble featuring: electric guitars, a small vocal choir, violin, trombone, trumpet, drums, percussion and... electronics!

Recording instruments and live electronics
I have written a number of pieces for solo instrument and live electronics over the past decade or so. These have included semi-improvised works, works with hardware electronics, interactive electronics, pieces where the electronics is performed with either a score or instructions. In every case, the electronics and the instrumental sound have been recorded simultaneously, irrespective of whether the recording has been in a concert hall or a recording studio. It has never occurred to me to do otherwise: it is like recording a duet or ensemble - there is a need to capture the interaction.
