Not just a jazzer!
I don't usually watch the BBC proms, but this evening I was at a loose end looking after my 3 month old son, and it just happened to be the most interesting thing on the television. I had no idea about the piece being performed other than its composer was also playing the piano part.

Kanye West
I happened to watch the edited highlights of the 2008 Grammy awards on UK TV last night, and notice that as well as wearing some fantastic clothing, Kanye West seemed to have Daft Punk on stage with him for his performance of Stronger. Reports of this are all over the blogosphere at the moment, as a quick Google search with keywords 'kanye west daft punk' demonstrates. Reading through some of the blog entries, I was particularly interested to find this post, in which some of the comments discuss whether or not Daft Punk were miming, and indeed whether or not it was Daft Punk on stage at all.

Music and Sonic Art
One of the questions people frequently ask me when I tell them I studied sonic art is "What's sonic art?". This interests me, because if I tell people that I studied music, no-one ever asks me what music is, they just assume that they already know. In this sense, we could look on the definition of music as being axiomatic, but what of sonic art?

Karlheinz Stockhausen RIP
Controversial, inspiring, avant-garde, spiritual. Thank you for everything you have given and the risks you have taken. RIP Stockhausen.

Efterklang
Speaking of pieces with instruments and electronics going smoothly, I went to see Danish band Efterklang last night. I actually went on a whim, not really knowing who they were, but it turns out they are a sub-genre-inducing Folk/Electronica/Post-pop ensemble featuring: electric guitars, a small vocal choir, violin, trombone, trumpet, drums, percussion and... electronics!
